Dogs travel free on CalMac
8 min
Ferry crossing β easy for any dog
Can dogs travel on the CalMac ferry?
Yes β dogs travel free on all CalMac ferries. They must be kept on a lead on the vehicle deck. The crossing is just 8 minutes so it's very easy for even nervous dogs.
Does my dog need to stay in the car?
If you have a car on the ferry, yes β dogs must stay in the vehicle or on the vehicle deck on a lead. Foot passengers can bring dogs on the open deck.
How do I book a dog-friendly crossing?
No booking needed if travelling as a foot passenger β just show up. Cars should be booked in advance at calmac.co.uk, especially in summer.
Kames Bay
The main beach β long, sandy, sheltered. Dogs welcome all year. Brilliant for a run at low tide. Calm enough for a swim together.
π‘ Park on the front and walk east β the beach gets quieter the further you go.
The Back of the Island
The wilder south shore β rocky, dramatic, and almost always empty. Dogs absolutely love it here. The smells alone are worth the trip.
π‘ Access from the Island Circuit road β pull over at any of the passing places and head to the shore.
Fintry Bay
A small sandy cove on the west side of the island. Sheltered, beautiful, and usually quiet even in peak season.
π‘ There's a small car park nearby. Best visited at low tide when the sand extends.

Fresh water
The seafront has water points. Most cafΓ©s will happily fill a bowl β just ask.
Lead rules
Dogs should be on leads near the town centre, the Cathedral, and anywhere with livestock. Off-lead heaven is the back shore and the open beaches.
Wildlife awareness
The south shore has ground-nesting birds in spring and early summer (AprilβJune). Keep dogs close in these areas β it protects the birds and keeps your dog safe from territorial dive-bombers.
Nearest vet
Largs Vets, Largs (8 minutes by ferry + short drive). Tel: 01475 672 718. For emergencies, Vets Now in Ayr covers overnight.
Last ferry
Check the timetable before you explore β the last ferry is earlier than you'd expect, especially in winter. A dog-walk that runs over can mean a very cold wait.
Bins
Dog waste bins are located along the seafront and at the main beach access points. Please always clean up β this is a small island and the community notices.
