From Millport seafront, walk east along the coast road, past Newton Sands, to the sandy stretch of Kames Bay. Sea on your left going out, on your right coming home. Pack a picnic, an ice cream from the Ritz, and a frisbee. Comfortable for a buggy or wheelchair on the road. 0.25 miles each way / 0.5 miles round trip back to Millport.

Pass Kames Bay, then continue around the south-east corner to the Marine Biological Station + Robertson Aquarium and Lion Rock — a basalt outcrop shaped like a sleeping lion. Quiet road, occasional cars. About 1.0 miles each way / 2.1 miles round trip. Or push on for the full circuit if you've got time.

The most popular half-walk on the island. Head west out of Millport on the coast road, sea on your left the whole way. The road climbs gently along the west coast — views across to Bute. Stop for tea at Fintry Bay Café (halfway round the circuit; toilets, ice cream, sea views). About 4.1 miles each way / 8.2 miles round trip back to Millport. Or push on round the rest of the circuit (~6 more miles) if you've got time.

Head west out of Millport on College Street and the small inland road through Upper Kirkton, then cut across to Fintry Bay café (toilets, ice cream, sea views). Return via the same way, or come back along the coast road for a circular. Quieter than the direct coast route, with views inland over the hills. Approximately 5 miles round trip if going out-and-back, or 5.5 miles as a circular with the coast on the return.

The other half of the island. Head east out of Millport, past Kames Bay and Lion Rock, around the south-east corner and up the east coast to the Cumbrae Slip — the CalMac ferry landing. 3.6 miles one way. Get the bus from the slip back to Millport (it meets every ferry), hitch a lift, or walk the inner road for variety. If returning on foot via the coast it's a 7.2 mile round trip.

The classic Cumbrae walk. From the Millport seafront, head up College Street past the Cathedral of the Isles, then follow the inland road north through the centre of the island. Where the road peters out, take the summit access track up to the Glaid Stone — the cairn marking Cumbrae's highest point at 127m. Panoramic views: Arran south, Bute west, Cowal hills beyond, and on a really clear day Ailsa Craig. About 3.6 miles up / 7.2 miles round trip back to Millport the same way. Real climbing — proper walking shoes recommended.

Cumbrae has two main roads: the famous coastal Island Circuit and the smaller B899 inner road (Ferry Road) that crosses the centre of the island. The inner road is hillier, much quieter, and gives you views down to both sides. 2.0 miles each way / 4.0 miles round trip Millport up to the ferry slip and back the same way. Good for a more demanding walk away from cyclists.

The classic local loop, walked as a circle so you never retrace your steps. Head north-east out of Millport up the inner road (B899/Ferry Road), climbing gently through the middle of the island all the way to the Cumbrae Slip — the CalMac ferry landing at the NE corner. From the slip, turn south and follow the coast road back along the east side of the island, past Lion Rock and the Marine Biological Station, past Kames Bay's sandy beach, past Crocodile Rock, and home to the Millport seafront. 5.9 mile loop — quieter than the full outer circuit, with a proper mix of inland and sea views. Best walked clockwise so you finish on the flat seafront. Real climb on the inner road. Good walking shoes, weatherproof jacket, water.

A serious walking day. The full circuit road around Cumbrae, 10.5 miles, almost completely flat. Sea on your left the whole way. Pack lunch and a flask. Fintry Bay Café is roughly halfway and has toilets. Allow 4–5 hours including stops.

A short uphill from the seafront on College Street to the Cathedral of the Isles. Built in 1851 — Britain's smallest cathedral, free to enter, worth half an hour inside. Continue a few steps past the cathedral for a panoramic view back over Millport Bay. Easy return downhill to town. 0.38 miles each way / 0.75 miles round trip.

From Millport seafront, walk west along the prom to the south-west corner, then turn inland up the small connector road to pick up the OSM footpath through the hills west of Millport — passing close to the Gowk Stane, a prehistoric standing stone. Open hillside, sheep, big sky. About 1.75 miles each way / 3.5 miles round trip back to Millport.
